2022 Taupenot-Merme Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Bel Air
Premier Cru Bel Air is located directly above the Grand Cru Chambertin-Clos de Beze. In 2019, it truly earned its nickname of "Baby Beze," deemed by the man at the helm of this domaine tracing back to the 1600s. The reason this is my wine of the year is simple: Bel Air has translucency and complexity that mark my favorite wines. Also, it just happens to be a fraction of the price of others in its league.
The destemmed approach gives a lifted sense of tension while also turning wild strawberry and red cherry into 4K resolution. I've stashed 750ml and magnum bottles in my personal cellar, as this is one I look forward to checking in on each year. But perhaps, the greatest strength of this 2019 is that it is outright delicious today.
